Why Is Lord Krishna Blue In Color – Shri Krishna is the son of Yashoda and Nanda, he is seen in blue color. Shri Krishna is known by the names Kanhaiya, Keshav, Dwarkadheesh, Shyam, Gopal or Dwarkadhish, Vasudev etc. He is considered to be the 8th incarnation of Vishnu, but in many of his pictures you must have seen him in blue color. Shri Krishna was born in Dwaparyuga. He has been given the status of the best man of this era, Yugpurusha or Yugavatar. Shrimad Bhagwat and Mahabharata written by Krishna’s contemporary Maharishi Ved Vyas have written in detail about the character of Krishna. Bhagavad Gita is a dialogue between Lord Shri Krishna – Arjuna. The text which is still popular all over the world, Krishna is also given the honor of Jagatguru for this teaching.

Shri Krishna was the 8th child of Vasudev – Devaki. Devaki was Kansa’s sister. Kansa was a tyrannical king. He put his father in prison and became the king himself. He had heard Akashvani that Devaki’s eighth son would kill him. To avoid this, Kansa put Devaki and Vasudev in the prison of Mathura and killed all their children one by one in the prison of Mathura.

The 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu i.e. Shri Krishna was born on the Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha of the month. Fearing Kansa, Vasudev crossed the Yamuna at night and reached Yashoda’s house in Gokul with the newborn baby. He was brought up in the house of Yashoda and Nand. In his childhood itself, he did such great deeds which were not possible for any ordinary human being. In Sanskrit language, Krishna means black, but when Kansa came to know that Krishna has been born and he is in Gokul, Kansa sent many demons to kill Kanha, Putana was also one of them.

Putana fed milk to Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna’s blue color was due to Putana making him drink poison. According to a belief, the blue color of Shri Krishna’s body was due to poison during the war with Kaliya Nag. Lord Krishna was the human incarnation of Lord Narayana. He was born on earth in Dwaparyuga as the nephew of the tyrant Kansa.

Actually, Kansa had imprisoned Shri Krishna’s parents i.e. Devaki-Vasudev in prison. Kansa came to know from an Akashvani that Devaki’s eighth son would be the cause of his death. Since then, Kansa imprisoned his sister Devaki and sister’s husband Vasudev.

In Sanskrit language, Krishna means black. But when Kansa came to know that Krishna was born and he was in Gokul, Kansa sent many demons to kill Kanha. Putana was also one of them. She was a huge demoness, who tried to make Krishna drink poison by telling him to breastfeed the baby Kanha.

Although she was successful, but Shri Krishna was the incarnation of Lord Hari himself. The poison did not affect him, but the color of his body turned blue and Putana was killed.

Effect of Kaliya Nag’s poison

According to another popular story – Another story is popular in mythological texts regarding the blue color of Kanha that once Shri Krishna was playing with a ball on the river bank with his gop friends and Kaliya Nag lived in that river. It was very poisonous due to which the color of Yamuna river turned black. While playing, the ball fell into that river. Now everyone knew about the water of Yamuna river and Kaliya Nag living in it, so no one agreed to go there.

When no one agreed to go into the river, Shri Krishna said that I will bring the ball, after which all the children stopped him from going into the river, but he did not listen and Krishna jumped into the river. All the children reached home in fear and hearing this, Yashoda Maiyya got scared and started crying bitterly. This news gradually spread like wildfire in the entire Gokul Dham, after which everyone ran towards the Yamuna river. But Krishna had not yet returned.

Seeing Krishna in the river, Kalia Nag’s wives asked him to go back but Krishna did not listen and then Kalia Nag woke up. Krishna ordered Kalia Nag to leave the Yamuna river, to which he refused and attacked Krishna with the intention of killing him. A fierce battle took place between Krishna and Kalia Nag. After some time, Kalia Nag was defeated and Krishna started dancing on his hood. Tired, Kalia Nag tried to save his life from Krishna.

Then Krishna asked him to go back to his place. Kalia said, Garuda will kill me there. How should I go there? On this Krishna said, Garuda will not kill you seeing my footprints on your hood. After this Kaliya Naag picked up Shri Krishna on his hood and came out of the Yamuna river and after this Kaliya went to his place with his wives. But during the battle with Kaliya Naag, Krishna could not reduce his influence, so the color of his body changed and became blue.
