Lord Parshuram (Parshuram Bhagwan) was born on Vaishakh Tritiya Shukla in a Brahmin sage family. The birthplace of Lord Parshuram is said to be Janapav mountain of Madhya Pradesh. Parshuram’s father’s name was Jamadagni and his mother’s name was Renuka. Parshuram is considered to be the sixth incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu.
Story of Parshuram – Who was Parshuram after all
Parshuram was born in a Brahmin family, his father was Maharishi Bhrigu’s son Maharishi Jamadagni and mother Renuka. According to the popular mythological story regarding his birth, Maharishi Jamadagni performed Putrayeshti Yagya, which pleased Devraj Indra and he gave a boon to his wife Renuka.
As a result of this boon, Parshuram was born as the fifth son on the Shukla Tritiya of Vaishakh i.e. Akshaya Tritiya from the womb of his wife Renuka. Parshuram’s birthplace was Janapav mountain of village Manpur in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh.
Parshuram ji is mentioned in Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagwat Purana and even Kalki Purana. However, the biggest reason for his popularity is the destruction of arrogant and impudent Haihaya dynasty Kshatriyas from the earth 21 times. It is also believed that most of the villages present in India have been settled by Lord Parshuram. His main objective was to spread Hindu Vedic culture on earth.
Lord Parshuram may belong to a Brahmin family, but he is not only the ideal of the Brahmin society but is considered the ideal of the entire Hindu society. Parshuram Bhagwan is considered to be the sixth and the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. After the naming ceremony done by his grandfather Maharshi Bhrigu, he was called Ram and because of the axe given by Lord Shiva, he was named Parshuram. Also, let us tell you that he is also called Jamdagni because he is the son of Maharshi Jamdagni.
Parshuram’s Pledge – Why did Parshuram kill the Kshatriyas 21 times?
According to the Parshuram Katha related to the pledge, the Kshatriya king Sahastrarjuna of the Haihaya dynasty was very proud of his power and due to this pride, he started torturing the Brahmins and sages. Once Sahastrarjuna reached the ashram of Lord Parshuram’s father Maharshi Jamdagni with his army. Maharshi Jamdagni treated the army with great respect and also arranged for good food.
Maharishi Jamadagni satisfied the hunger of all the soldiers with the milk of the miraculous Kamdhenu cow present in the ashram. Seeing the miracle of Kamdhenu cow, Sahastrarjuna’s mind got greedy to get it. Due to his greed, he forcibly snatched Kamdhenu cow from Maharishi. When Parashuram came to know about this, he got angry and killed Sahastrarjuna.
Then the story of Parashuram’s vow begins from here when Sahastrarjuna’s sons, burning in the fire of revenge, killed Maharishi Jamadagni. After the murder of their father, their mother Renuka also became sati on the pyre in grief. Parashuram had seen 21 wounds on his father’s body. Seeing these wounds, Parashuram took a vow at that very moment that he would kill all the Kshatriya clans from this earth in 21 times.
Why did Parashuram kill his mother?
Parshuram killed his mother on the orders of his father Maharshi Bhrigu. When Maharshi Bhrigu, in a fit of anger, ordered to behead mother Renuka due to Renuka’s delay in coming home, all his brothers refused to do so. On which Maharshi Bhrigu cursed them that their thought consciousness would be destroyed.
When he asked Parshuram to do so, fearing the curse and not violating his father’s orders, he beheaded his mother Renuka.
Maharshi Bhrigu was happy with Parshuram’s obedience and then asked him to ask for a boon. Parshuram asked for three boons from his father, out of which the first boon was that his mother should be brought back to life. The second boon was that the thought consciousness of the brothers should not be destroyed and the third boon was that they should not remember dying.
What was the name of Lord Parshuram’s wife?
There is no mention of Parshuram’s marriage in Shrimad Bhagwatam, so most people believe that he remained a celibate throughout his life. While in Vishnu Purana, we find the description of Parshuram’s wife as follows,
