According to the Puranas, in her first incarnation, she was the daughter of sage Bhrigu and his wife Khyati. Later she arose from him during the churning of the Ksheer Sagar. She, being the wife of Vishnu, is born as his wife whenever he incarnates. When Shri Vishnu appeared in the form of Vamana, Rama and Krishna, Mata Lakshmi appeared in the form of Padma (or Kamala), Sita and Rukmini. She is inseparable from Vishnu in the same way as speech from wealth, knowledge from intellect, or good deeds from Dharma-Karma.

According to the story, Mother Lakshmi (Lakshmi Maa) was not born in an ordinary form but in a very supernatural form. In the desire of Amrit, the gods and demons churned the ocean together. Both Amrit and Halahal were obtained from this sea churning. Lord Shiva consumed Halahal, due to which his throat turned blue and he was called Neelkanth. But, 14 priceless gems were also obtained from this sea churning. Goddess Mahalakshmi also appeared with these gems. It is believed that Mother Lakshmi was holding a Kalash and Var Mudra in her hands and she chose Lord Vishnu as her husband.
It is believed that this supernatural incident happened on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month, that is why this day is celebrated as Lakshmi Jayanti. Worshiping Mother Lakshmi on this day is considered very auspicious. It is said that by worshipping Goddess Lakshmi with full rituals on this day, her blessings remain with you. Lakshmi Jayanti is celebrated with great pomp in South India.
How did Lord Vishnu marry Goddess Lakshmi?
Lord Vishnu was married under very interesting circumstances. This marriage is discussed in the Puranas. An interesting episode of the time of Swayamvara is read. So let’s know –
Mata Lakshmi was the daughter of Sage Bhrigu. Her mother’s name was Khyaati. Bhrigu Rishi was the brother of King Daksha. Once a Swayamvara was organized for Lakshmiji. Mother Lakshmi had already accepted Vishnuji as her husband in her heart, but Narad Muni also wanted to marry Lakshmiji. Naradji thought that this princess would choose him only after getting the form of Hari. Then Naradji reached Lord Vishnu to ask for a beautiful form like Hari.
Lord Narayan gave him the form of Hari as per the wish of Devrishi Naradji. When Narad reached the princess’s swayamvar in the form of Hari, he was sure that the princess would garland him, but this did not happen. The princess left Narad and garlanded Lord Vishnu. Naradji was returning from there with a sad face, when on the way he saw his face inside a reservoir. Naradji was surprised to see his face, because his face looked like a monkey.
‘Hari’ means Vishnu and another meaning is also monkey. Lord Vishnu had given Narad the form of a monkey. Narad understood that Lord Vishnu had cheated him. He got very angry with the Lord. Narad reached Vaikunth directly and in a fit of anger cursed the Lord that you will have to take birth in human form and go to earth. Just as I have to bear the separation from a woman, you will also have to bear the separation. Therefore, by taking birth as Ram and Sita, Shri Vishnu and Shri Devi Lakshmi had to bear the separation for many years.
In this story, there is also a mention of Lord Ganesha being insulted by Vishnu and the gods. Due to which, when Vishnu went out with the wedding procession, Ganesha asked his mouse to dig up the entire road. Later, Ganesha was appeased and worshipped, then the wedding procession could move forward.
