Vaishno Devi Temple is situated on Trikuta Mountain at an altitude of 5,200 feet, 12 kilometers (7.45 miles) away from Katra town in Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir state, where lakhs of pilgrims reach for darshan every year.
Vaishno Devi shrine is located at an altitude of 5 thousand feet above sea level and to reach Mata Ka Darbar, which is also called Bhawan, from the base camp Katra, one has to climb about 13 kilometers.
It is not necessary to climb on foot to visit Mata Vaishno Devi. If you want, you can also climb the temple of Mata Vaishno Devi by riding a horse, mule, pitthu or palanquin, which are easily available to go from Katra to Bhawan. Along with this, regular helicopter service is also available between Katra and Sanjhi Chhat. You will have to walk only 2.5 km from Sanjhi Chhat.
It is a religious belief that the journey of devotees visiting the court of Maa Vaishno Devi is not considered complete until the devotee visits Bhairon Valley and visits Bhairav Baba in the temple.

The small town of Jammu, Katra, serves as the base camp of Vaishno Devi, which is 50 km from Jammu. It is necessary to register before starting the journey because only on the basis of the registration slip one gets a chance to visit the temple.
When to go to Vaishno Devi?
Although the Vaishno Devi Yatra is open throughout the year and one can go here anytime, but in summer, due to the peak season between May to June and Navratri (March to April and September to October), a huge crowd of devotees is seen. Apart from this, one should avoid traveling in July-August during the rainy season as climbing becomes difficult due to slippery travel route. Apart from this, it is extremely cold here between December to January.

The base camp Katra is at an altitude of 2 thousand 500 feet above sea level, while the temple of Vaishno Devi is at an altitude of 5 thousand 200 feet above sea level, so there is a lot of difference in the temperature of these two places. If you are traveling in monsoon, then keep a raincoat or umbrella with you. Do not forget to keep lots of woolen clothes, jackets, caps and gloves in winter season. However, blankets are also available on the way during the journey. Wear comfortable shoes while climbing. Apart from this, you can also keep light warm clothes with you in summer season because it is possible that if the weather changes when you reach the building above, you may feel cold.
History Of Vaishno Mata
It is believed that Mata Vaishno Devi took the form of a beautiful princess in the Treta Yuga in the form of Mata Parvati, Saraswati and Lakshmi for the welfare of mankind. She did penance on Trikuta Mountain, later her body merged into the subtle form of three divine energies Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati.
It is believed about the story and glory of Maa Vaishnodevi Temple that the temple was built by Pandit Shridhar about 700 years ago. Shridhar used to be a Brahmin priest, and Shridhar and his wife were great devotees of Mata Rani.
Once Shridhar got an order to organize a Bhandara in his dream. But Shridhar’s financial condition was not good. Due to which he started worrying about the event and stayed awake the whole night, then he left everything to fate. In the morning, people started arriving there to receive the Prasad, after which he saw that a small girl in the form of Vaishno Devi came to his hut and prepared a Bhandara with him.
The villagers accepted this Prasad. After receiving this Prasad, people felt satisfied but not Bhairavnath who was present there. He demanded more food for his animals. But there a small girl in the form of Vaishno Devi refused to do so on behalf of Shridhar. After which Bhairavnath could not tolerate this insult and he tried to catch the divine girl, but he could not succeed in doing so. Then the girl disappeared, Shridhar was very saddened by this incident.
Shridhar expressed his desire to see his mother goddess. After which one night Vaishno Mata appeared in Shridhar’s dream and showed him the way to a cave on Trikuta Mountain, in which there is her ancient temple, later this temple became world famous and came to be known as Mata Vaishno Devi all over the world.
