This story describes in detail about the incomparable respect and love towards mother and father. Shravan Kumar devoted his whole life to the service of his mother and father. He does not consider any religion greater than serving his parents. He served his parents till the end. That is why he is immortal today, his name is on every person’s lips. Shravan Kumar’s father’s name was Shantun. Shantun was a saint and his mother’s name was Gyanvati. Shravan Kumar’s parents were blind, they raised their son Shravan with great difficulties. Therefore, Shravan had immense love and respect for his parents.
Shravan Kumar started helping his parents in their work in childhood and when he grew up, he started doing all the household work. Like bringing water from the river, picking wood from the forest, preparing food, he used to do all the household work. He was completely engaged in serving his parents. He wanted to spend all his life in the service of his parents.
When Shravan Kumar became eligible for marriage, his parents got him married to a woman. But the woman he was married to considered his blind parents a burden and used to trouble them a lot. But in front of Shravan Kumar, she used to behave well with them and used to take good care of them. But behind their back, she used to speak ill of them.
When Shravan Kumar came to know about this, he scolded his wife a lot, due to which his wife got angry and she went to her father’s house, she never returned. After his wife left, Shravan considered serving his parents as his religion, considered their sorrow as his sorrow, started considering their pain as his own pain, he never let his parents feel sad.
With time, Shravan Kumar grew up and his parents became old, his parents’ last wish was that he should go on a pilgrimage. They told their wish to their son Shravan Kumar, then Shravan Kumar got ready to fulfill their wish and started making preparations to go.
Shravan Kumar made his parents sit in two baskets and made a Kaanwar on his shoulders and started walking. Shravan Kumar took his parents to many pilgrimage places like Kashi, Gaya, Prayagraj. He used to describe the pilgrimage places to his parents. In this way his parents have been seeing the pilgrimage places through his eyes.
Shravan Kumar was going through the forest when it was evening and in the evening his parents felt very thirsty. They asked Shravan Kumar to bring water. Shravan Kumar kept the Kaanwar in which his parents were sitting under a tree and took the Kalash and set out in search of water. After walking a little distance, he saw a river and he reached near that river.
On the same day, King Dasharath of Ayodhya went out to hunt in the forests. After roaming here and there in the forests the whole day, he did not find any prey and he was about to leave for home when he heard a sound on the bank of the river. He thought that surely some wild animal must have come to the river bank to quench his thirst.
King Dasharath moved towards the river and stopped under a tree and shot the ‘Shabdbhedi Baan’. The arrow was moving towards the sound, which King Dasharath heard. But it was not any wild animal or creature but Shravan Kumar who had gone to fetch water for his parents. The arrow hit his chest and he started crying out in pain. Hearing this cry, King Dasharath realized his mistake and he reached the bank of the river.
Shravan Kumar lay there in an injured state. When King Dasharath reached there, he felt very sad. He started cursing himself, he started asking for forgiveness from Shravan Kumar. Then Shravan Kumar said, “O King, I am not sad about my death, I am sad about my parents’ wish which I could not fulfill. I could not make them visit all the pilgrimages and they are restless with thirst at this time, I could not give them water. O King! Please take this pot and quench the thirst of my parents.”
Saying this, Shravan Kumar gave up his life.
King Dasharath, saddened and distraught by his crime, knowingly or unknowingly, somehow reached Shravan’s parents. Shravan Kumar’s parents could not see him but they knew by hearing the sound of his footsteps that their son was Shravan Kumar. But this time it was not Shravan Kumar.
When his father asked, King Dasharath narrated the entire incident. On hearing the news of their son’s death, the parents started wailing loudly and they cursed King Dasharath that he too will suffer the separation from his son and will die in agony.
Due to this curse, King Dasharath’s elder son Maryada Purushottam Ram had to spend 14 years in exile and King Dasharath died in agony in the separation from his son.
