Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Dhanushkodi village of Rameswaram in the state of Tamil Nadu. His full name was ‘Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam’, but he is known as Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Missile Man. Dr APJ Kalam’s father’s name was ‘Jainulabdeen’, who was a sailor, and his mother’s name was ‘Asimma’, who used to be a housewife. Dr Kalam had five siblings.
Dr Kalam’s early life was full of struggles. He also worked as a newspaper distributor to continue his early education. He had a great desire to learn since childhood. After completing his matriculation from Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, Dr Kalam moved to Madras in 1955. There he completed his studies in Aerospace Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam wanted to become a fighter pilot but he got ninth place in the Indian Air Force (IAF) entrance exam, while the IAF announced the result only up to the 8th rank, so he could not become a pilot.

After completing his studies, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as a scientist, where he worked on the Hovercraft Project. Dr Kalam also worked with the famous scientist Vikram Sarabhai for some time. After this, he joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1962, where he played an important role in many successful satellite launch projects as a project director.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam played an important role in the construction of India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle SLV-III as a project director in ISRO. With this first satellite vehicle, India successfully sent Rohini satellite into space in the year 1980. Dr. Kalam made a significant contribution in making this missile, due to which he was awarded the title of ‘Missile Man’. After this, Dr. Kalam worked on many important projects for the country and made many missiles for the country.
After this, Dr. Kalam worked as Secretary in the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) from 1992 to 1999. He was also the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister. Dr. Kalam played an important technical and political role in the second nuclear test in the year 1998. It was only after this successful nuclear test that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India a fully developed nuclear country and India emerged as a superpower in the world.

Death of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Even after being in the highest position in the country, Dr. Kalam always lived his life with simplicity. His nature was very simple, straightforward and humble. He always saw himself as a scientist and teacher. But on 27 July 2015, while giving a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, he suddenly died of cardiac arrest.
