The story of Krishna-Sudama’s friendship
Even though Krishna, Sudama and other friends used to study together in childhood. But a time came when Shri Krishna became the king of Dwarka and his friend Sudama became so poor that it became difficult to arrange for food.
After getting education from the ashram, Shri Krishna came to Mathura and later settled there as the king of Dwarka. Sudama also came to his village Asmavatipur, which is currently Porbandar, after getting education from the ashram and started raising his family by begging.
It is said that Sudama used to beg alms from only five houses in a day. If he got something from these houses, the family would be full, otherwise he would have to sleep hungry. Sudama became unable to raise his family. Then Sudama’s wife Sushila asked him to go to Dwarka and ask for help from Dwarkadish Shri Krishna. Sudama hesitated a bit after listening to Sushila. But Sudama had no other way left. At first Sudama refused but later he agreed to his wife and started walking towards Dwarka.
It is said that a person should never go empty handed to these five places: king, guru, friend, daughter and temple. Thinking this, Sushila asked for three handfuls of rice from the neighbor and filled it in a bundle and gave it to Sudama and told him to gift it to Kanhaiya.
When Sudama reached Shri Krishna’s palace in Dwarkanagari, the gatekeepers standing outside the palace looked at Sudama with a feeling of inferiority and asked why he had come here. When Sudama introduced himself and said that he was Krishna’s friend, the gatekeepers went inside and told this to Krishna. Krishna, on receiving the message of his friend Sudama’s arrival, ran from the palace to the gate and hugged his friend Sudama.
Krishna took Sudama inside the palace and made him sit on his royal throne and washed his feet with his tears. Seeing Krishna, his queens and everyone present in the palace were surprised. Everyone started wondering whose feet is Dwarkadish washing. Krishna told all the people present there that this is his friend Sudama.
When Krishna asked Sudama what message he had brought for him? Hearing this, Sudama felt ashamed and he hid his bundle and said, nothing. Then Krishna said- why are you lying friend, do you want to eat my share of rice even today like in childhood.
Saying this, Krishna himself took that bundle from Sudama and started eating rice. As soon as Krishna ate a handful of rice, he gave Sudama the wealth of one world in return. After this, Krishna ate the second handful of rice and gave Sudama the wealth of two worlds. But Krishna was about to eat the third handful of rice when Rukmani stopped him and said- Prabhu! If you give the wealth of all three worlds to them, then where will all the other creatures and gods go? Krishna stopped after listening to Rukmani. In this way, Krishna helped Sudama as well as bid him farewell lovingly.
