Devshayani Ekadashi fast is observed on Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. According to religious belief, from Devshayani Ekadashi, the gods go to sleep and no auspicious work is done.
On the day of Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu goes into Yog Nidra for 4 months, so it is called Devshayani Ekadashi. With this, all auspicious works start again. This year Devshayani Ekadashi is on Wednesday, 17 July 2024. Many auspicious yogas are being formed on this day, which has made this day even more special.
This fast is broken after sunrise on the next day of Ekadashi fast. According to astrologers, it should be broken before Dwadashi Tithi. Parana is not done on Dwadashi Tithi. Therefore, on July 18 i.e. Guru Pradosh Vrat Tithi, after sunrise, you can break the fast from 05:35 am to 08:20 am. During this, take bath and meditate and worship Lord Vishnu. After this, break the fast after donating food and money to Brahmins.

Rules of Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat
On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, you should wear clean clothes after taking bath. After that, you should take water in your hand and take a pledge of Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat and Vishnu Puja.
During Ekadashi Vrat, you have to follow the rules of celibacy. You have to stay on fruits and water throughout the day. Consumption of food is prohibited.
Use of detergent, soap, oil, consumption of tamasic things, cutting hair, beard and nails is prohibited on Ekadashi.
Do not sweep the house on Devshayani Ekadashi. It is said that the fasting person should take care that no living being is hurt by his hands. Small living beings can be harmed while sweeping, hence sweeping on Ekadashi is prohibited.

What should the fasting people not do on this day
According to Hindu religious texts, on the day of Ekadashi fast, one should worship Lord Vishnu properly and offer Tulsi leaves to him. Tulsi leaves are very dear to Lord Vishnu, but take special care that on Ekadashi, do not offer water to Tulsi and do not pluck the leaves. Doing this makes Goddess Lakshmi angry.
Special care should be taken of food on the day of Ekadashi fast. Eating rice or donating rice on this special day is forbidden. Doing so leads to birth in the category of crawling creatures in the next life. Along with this, on this special day, one should also avoid tamasic food like onion-garlic etc. Also, meat and alcohol should not be consumed even by mistake.
