How Shiva Born – There are many stories about the birth of Lord Shiva. When was Lord Shiva born, where and how, many different things have been said in the Puranas about this.
Lord Shivashankar is called Swayambhu, which means that he is unborn. He has neither beginning nor end. Bholenath Shivashankar is said to be unborn and indestructible.
Lord Shankar has an important place among the Tridevas. Lord Brahma plays the role of creator, Lord Vishnu as protector and Lord Shiva as destroyer. The origin of these Tridevas is itself a mystery. Many Puranas believe that Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu originated from Shivashankar. However, the question arises in the minds of Shiva devotees that how was Lord Shiva born?
It is said that Lord Shiva is Swayambhu, which means that he was not born from a human body. When there was nothing, there was Lord Shiva and even after everything is destroyed, he will exist. There are many stories about the birth of Lord Shiva and Vishnu in different Puranas. So let’s know about them –
1) Story – According to Shiva Purana
According to Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva is considered to be self-born, whereas according to Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu is self-born. According to Vishnu Purana, Brahma was born from the navel lotus of Lord Vishnu, while Shiva was born from the brilliance of Lord Vishnu’s forehead. Due to being born from the brilliance of the forehead, Shiva always remains in yoga posture.
2) Story – According to Shrimad Bhagwat
One such story is about Shiva’s birth. According to Shrimad Bhagwat, once when Lord Vishnu and Brahma were overwhelmed with ego, they started fighting, claiming themselves to be superior. At that time, Lord Shiva appeared from a burning pillar whose meaning Brahma and Vishnu could not understand. According to mythological beliefs, Brahma named Shiva as Rudra which means ‘the weeping one’.
3) Story – According to Vishnu Purana
A story related to the birth of Lord Shiva is very popular in Vishnu Purana. According to the story, Brahma once needed a child. For this, Brahma did a tough penance. As a result of the penance, Brahma received a crying child in his lap. This child was none other than Shiva. When Brahma asked the child the reason for his crying, the child replied to Brahma very innocently that he had no name. This is the reason why he was crying. Hearing this, Brahma named the child Rudra.
4) Story – According to Vishnu Purana
There is also a mythological story in Vishnu Purana (vishnu puran) that Bholenath was born as the son of Brahma. According to this, when the entire universe including earth, sky, underworld was submerged in water, then only Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh were present in the form of gods or creatures. Only Lord Vishnu was lying on the water surface. Then Brahma appeared on the lotus stem from his navel. At the same time, when both were talking about the creation, Shiva appeared. But Brahma clearly refused to recognize him. Lord Vishnu reminded Brahma about Shiva to prevent Lord Shiva from getting angry. Then Brahma remembered Shiva and Brahma realized his mistake. After this, Shiva himself got angry. He apologized to Shiva. Also asked for blessings that Bholenath should be born as his son. Shiva accepted this.
5) Story – Kurma Purana
According to Kurma Purana, when Brahma Ji started facing difficulty in creating the universe, he started crying. Ghosts and spirits were born from Brahma Ji’s tears and Rudra was born from his mouth. Rudra is considered to be a part of Lord Shiva and ghosts and spirits are considered to be his Ganas i.e. servants.
6) Story – According to Shiva Purana
According to Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva is considered to be self-born, whereas according to Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu is self-born. According to Shiva Purana, once when Lord Shiva was rubbing nectar on his ankle, Lord Vishnu was born from it, whereas according to Vishnu Purana, Shiva Shankar is said to have been born from the brilliance of Lord Vishnu’s forehead.
7) Story – According to Shiva Purana
According to Shiva Purana, Lord Shankar is believed to have originated from Lord Sadashiv and Parashakti Ambika. That Ambika is also called Prakriti, Sarveshwari, Tridevjanani (mother of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh), Nitya and Mool Karan. The power manifested by Sadashiv has 8 arms. Parashakti, the mother of the universe, is endowed with various kinds of movements and holds many types of weapons. The goddess of power is Durga, the consort of Sadashiv in the form of time. Durga appeared from that Sadashiv.
