Buddha was born on the day of Vaishakh Purnima in Lumbini from the womb of Queen Mahamaya of King Shuddhodana of Shakya dynasty. The capital of the Shakya Republic was Kapilvastu. Siddhartha’s father was King Shuddhodhana of the Shakyas, Buddha is also called Shakya Muni.

He stayed here in the mango forest of a blacksmith named Chund Kammarputra. He gave them sweet rice, roti and maddav for food. Buddha provided sweet rice and bread to others but did not give Maddava to anyone because he thought that no one else would be able to digest it. He himself also ate a little. The rest was buried in the ground. As soon as he ate this, he fell ill and died.

Buddha went to Kushimara with his disciples. On the way, he said to his disciple Anand, ‘Anand, make this sandhari sit in four folds. I am tired, I will lie down. Anand, bring me water from the Kukuttha river.
Buddha again took a bath in that Kukuttha river. After that, they spread a rag on the sand and lay down there. After resting for some time, he started walking, on the way he crossed the Hiranyavati river and finally reached Kushimara. Here he said, ‘I was born between two Sal trees, hence my end will also be between two Sal trees. Now my last time has come.
Anand felt very sad and started crying. When Buddha came to know about it, he called him and said, ‘I had already told you that everything that has come into existence dies. Nirvana is inevitable and natural. So why are you crying? Buddha told Anand not to consider him as his guru after his death.
After the death of Buddha, his son Rahul also became a monk. But Buddha never allowed them to gain any importance. Buddha’s wife Yashodhara did not become his disciple till the end.
After his death, people kept coming for darshan for 6 days. The body was burnt on the seventh day. Then there was a fierce fight over his remains between King Ajatashatru of Magadha, Shakyas of Kapilvastu and Vichchavis of Vaishali etc.
When the quarrel did not subside, a Brahmin named Drona made an agreement that the remains should be divided into eight parts, then this happened. Eight stupas were built in eight states and the remains were kept there. It is said that later Ashoka had them removed and distributed among 84000 stupas.
