Mahavir Hanuman is said to be the 11th Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva and he is an exclusive devotee of Lord Shri Ram. Hanuman ji was born in the monkey caste. His mother’s name is Anjana (Anjani) and his father is Vanararaj Kesari. This is why he is called by the names Anjanay and Kesari Nandan. According to another belief, Hanuman ji is also called Pawan Putra.

Pavan Dev also contributed to Hanuman ji’s birth. Once King Dasharath of Ayodhya was performing Putrayeshti Havan with his wives. This Havan was being performed to get a son. After the completion of the Havan, Gurudev distributed the prasad kheer among the three queens.

A crow took a part of the kheer with itself to a place where Anjani Maa was doing penance. All this was happening as per the wish of Lord Shiva and Vayu Dev. When the kheer came in the hands of Anjana who was doing penance, she accepted it as Shiva’s Prasad. Hanuman was born because of this Prasad.

Story of Hanuman’s birth —-

Kesari’s kingdom was in Sumeru, which was made of gold due to the boon of the Sun. He had a very beautiful wife named Anjana. Once Anjana took a holy bath and wore beautiful clothes and ornaments. At that time, the god of wind entered her earlobe and assured her that she would have a son as radiant as the sun, fire and gold, a knower of the Vedas and Vedangas, and a mighty Vishwanday, and that is what happened.

Hanumanji was born from Anjana’s womb on the Mahanisha of Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi. Two prahars later, as soon as the sun rose, he felt hungry. His mother went to bring fruits. Considering the red sun as a fruit, Hanumanji jumped into the sky to get it.

That day being Amavasya, Rahu had come to swallow the sun, but considering Hanumanji to be another Rahu, he ran away. Then Indra struck Hanumanji with a thunderbolt. Due to this, his chin became crooked, due to which he was called Hanuman.

To punish Indra for this evil eye, the god of wind stopped the air circulation of all living beings. Then all the gods including Brahma blessed Hanuman.

Brahma blessed him with an eternal life, Indra blessed him with thunderbolt, Surya blessed him with a hundredth of his brightness and an expert in all the scriptures, Varun blessed him with being safe from noose and water, Yama blessed him with being indestructible by Yama’s rod and not being destroyed by the noose, Kuber blessed him with being fearless from the mace of Shatrumardini, Shankar blessed him with victory over mad and invincible warriors and Vishwakarma blessed him with not being harmed by all types of incomprehensible and unbearable weapons, arms and machines made by Maya.

The deeds of immense valour that Hanumanji performed in future due to the influence of such boons are famous among his devotees and those which are unheard of or unknown can be known from various types of Ramayanas, Puranas like Padma, Skanda and Vayu and innumerable texts on the subject of worship.

Appearance of Hanuman Ji —

In religious texts, Lord Hanuman’s appearance is described as similar to that of a monkey. He is depicted with a red complexion and a curved tail like that of a monkey. He is shown carrying a mace. According to mythology, Lord Hanuman took the Panchmukhi avatar to kill a demon named Mahiravana. Panchmukhi means the five-faced form of Hanuman Ji, in which Shri Varah is towards the north, Shri Narasimha towards the south, Shri Garuda towards the west, Shri Hayagriva towards the sky and Hanuman Ji himself is facing the east.
