Eklavya Story (Story Of Eklavya) – Eklavya Ki Kahani
This is about the time when the form of education used to be very different from today. The schools of that time used to be Gurukul. To receive education, all the students used to live in the ashram with their Guru. Everyone lived together like a family and used to share all the work. All the disciples used to receive education with great devotion and honesty. At that time education was also given according to the clan. Education was not given to anyone except Brahmins and Kshatriyas.
During the Mahabharata period, there was a kingdom named Shringaverpur spread far and wide in the coastal region of Prayag (Allahabad). Vyatraj Harinyadhanu was the king of that tribal area and a great warrior. Shringaverpur, situated on the banks of the Ganga, was his strong capital. At that time, the power of the Shringaverpur kingdom was equivalent to the big kingdoms like Magadha, Hastinapur, Mathura, Chedi and Chanderi.
Nishadraj Hiranyadhanu and Queen Sulekha and their subjects were happy and prosperous. Queen Sulekha of Nishadraj Hiranyadhanu gave birth to a son who was named “Abhidyumna”. In childhood, he was known as “Abhay”. In his childhood, when “Abhay” went to the Gurukul of his clan for education, seeing the child’s dedication and devotion in the art of weapons, the Guru addressed the child as “Eklavya”.
After receiving all the education, Eklavya became a youth and then he got married to Sunita, the daughter of a Nishad friend of Hiranyadhanu. Eklavya was not satisfied with his archery, so to get higher education in archery, he decided to go to Guru Drona, who was an expert in archery at that time.
Eklavya’s father knew that Dronacharya teaches only Brahmins and Kshatriyas and he also told Eklavya about this, but with the passion of learning archery and thinking of impressing Dronacharya with his skills, he went to him. But nothing like this happened and Guru Dronacharya refused to teach him archery.
Eklavya was not hurt by this and he decided to learn archery by staying in the forest. He made a statue of Dronacharya in the forest and by meditating on him, he mastered archery.
One day Acharya Drona reached the same forest where Eklavya lived for hunting with his disciples and a dog. His dog lost its way and reached Eklavya’s ashram and started barking. Eklavya was practicing archery at that time. The barking of the dog was disturbing Eklavya’s meditation. So he shot arrows in such a way that the dog did not get even a scratch and the dog’s mouth was also shut. Eklavya shot arrows with such skill that the dog did not get any kind of injury and he closed the dog’s mouth with his arrows.
The dog ran towards Drona. The dog reached Guru Drona helplessly. Drona and the disciple were surprised to see such excellent archery. While searching for that great archer, he reached Eklavya’s ashram and saw that Eklavya was shooting arrows that even a top warrior could not shoot. This became a matter of concern for Dronacharya. When he showed curiosity to know about Eklavya’s Guru, Eklavya showed him that statue.
He was even more surprised to know that Eklavya had acquired knowledge by practicing on his own by considering Dronacharya as his mental Guru. Seeing his statue, the Acharya said that if you consider me your Guru, then give me Guru Dakshina. Eklavya even talked about giving his life. In Guru Dakshina, Guru Drona asked for his thumb so that Eklavya does not become the best archer, if this happens then the promise of making Arjun a great archer will be proved false. Eklavya offered his thumb to the Guru without hesitation. After this, everyone left except Eklavya.
According to an old story, it can also have a symbolic meaning that Dronacharya, knowing Eklavya to be extremely intelligent, gave him the special knowledge of shooting a bow without the thumb. It is also said that after his thumb was cut off, Eklavya started shooting arrows using the index and middle finger. This is where the modern method of archery was born. Therefore, it would be appropriate to call Eklavya the father of modern archery. Undoubtedly, this is a better method and archery is done in this way nowadays.
Later Eklavya returned to Shringber kingdom and started living there. After the death of his father, he became the ruler there and with the advice of the Amatya Parishad, he not only ran his kingdom, but also formed a strong army and navy of Nishad Bhils and expanded the boundaries of his kingdom.
According to the information available on the Internet, after becoming the king of the Nishad dynasty, Eklavya attacked Mathura on behalf of Jarasandh’s army and almost wiped out the Yadav army. After the uproar in the Yadav dynasty, when Krishna saw Eklavya shooting a bow and arrow with the help of just four fingers in his right hand, he could not believe this scene.
Eklavya alone was capable of stopping hundreds of Yadav clan warriors. In this war, Krishna killed Eklavya by deceit. His son Ketuman was killed by Bhima in the Mahabharata war.
When all the Pandavas were boasting of their bravery after the war, Krishna confessed his love for Arjun.
Krishna had clearly told Arjun that “What all I have not done for your love. To make you the best archer in the world, I got Dronacharya killed, weakened the mighty Karna and without your knowledge, I killed Bhil’s son Eklavya and there was only one reason behind all this that you were on the path of religion. So never leave the path of religion”.
