Amarnath is located in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir state of India, which has a height of 13,600 feet above sea level. This cave on Amarnath mountain is in South Kashmir, which is located at a distance of 140 kilometers from Srinagar. Also, the distance of this holy cave from Baltal is 16 kilometers. The distance of the holy cave from Pahalgam is 45-47 kilometers.
The Amarnath cave located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir is situated in the lap of the Himalayas. This cave is surrounded by snowy mountains and sheets of ice. Even in the summer season, except for a few days, this cave is covered with snow. The special thing is that a natural Shivling is formed in this cave every year. In this holy cave, water drops drip from above, which forms Baba Barfani Shivling. Actually, due to extreme cold, the water drops freeze and take the shape of a Shivling. It is believed that this Shivling increases and decreases with the light of the moon.
How to reach Amarnath
Road route – The Amarnath cave is in a mountainous and inaccessible place. There is no direct road facility from other parts of the country. To reach Amarnath Dham by road, first you have to go to Jammu, and then prepare a journey from Jammu to Srinagar. After this, you can reach Pahalgam or Baltal from Srinagar. The holy journey starts from these two places. Pahalgam is located at a distance of about 92 km from Srinagar and Baltal is located at a distance of about 93 km. Apart from this, Pahalgam can also be reached through bus or taxi services. You will get regular bus service from Delhi city. Also, Amarnath is at a distance of 631 km from Delhi and 2370 km from Bengaluru.
Air route – The trek to Amarnath starts from Pahalgam and the nearest airport to Pahalgam is in Srinagar which is about 90 km away. Apart from this, Jammu airport is also its second option which is at a distance of about 263 km. Srinagar and Jammu airports are connected with almost all the major cities of the country. Flight between Delhi and Srinagar takes about 1.35 hours, while flight from Mumbai to Srinagar takes about 3 hours and from Bengaluru it takes 4.40 hours. From Srinagar, you can also go to Pahalgam through taxi or bus. It takes about 12-15 hours to reach Pahalgam from Jammu by road. From Srinagar you can go to Pahalgam by bus which takes about 2.40 hours. Apart from this, you can also reach Pahalgam by taxi, which takes about 2 hours.
Railway – The nearest railway station to Pahalgam is Udhampur which is about 217 km away. But Jammu railway station is better connected to the whole country than Udhampur. The name of Jammu railway station is Jammu Tawi, from here trains run to almost all the major cities of the country.
Now the further journey starts on foot
You can reach Pahalgam or Baltal by any vehicle but you will have to travel further on foot. There are two routes to reach the holy cave of Amarnath from Pahalgam and Baltal. Both these places are well connected to Srinagar, so most of the devotees start their journey from Srinagar itself. The distance from Pahalgam to the holy cave of Amarnath is about 48 km and from Baltal it is 14 km.
Baltal Route – Amarnath cave can be reached in less time from Baltal, because it is a short route. The distance from Baltal to Amarnath cave is about 14 km, but this route is very difficult and has a straight climb, due to which not many elderly and sick people come through this route.
Pahalgam Route – Pahalgam route is the oldest and historical route of Amarnath Yatra. It takes about 3 days to reach the cave through this route. But it is not very difficult. The first stop from Pahalgam is Chandanwadi which is about 16 km from Pahalgam base camp, till here the route is almost flat, after this the climb starts. The next stop is Pissu Top 3 km ahead. The third stop is Sheshnag which is about 9 km from Pissu Top. After Sheshnag, the next stop is Panchtarni which is 14 km from Sheshnag. The holy cave is only 6 kilometers away from Panchtarni.
